Active Learning Strategies in Medical Education
Summary
Active learning in medical education encompasses pedagogical approaches that engage learners through participation, collaboration and reflection rather than passive reception. Core strategies include problem-based learning (PBL), in which students work in small groups to analyse clinical scenarios; team-based learning (TBL), which combines preparatory individual study with group application exercises; and flipped-classroom models, where foundational content is studied independently and classroom time is devoted to discussion and practice. Simulation-based education uses high-fidelity manikins or virtual reality to replicate clinical encounters, allowing deliberate practice of technical and communication skills in a safe environment. Peer instruction and peer-led seminars encourage learners to take responsibility for teaching and explaining concepts to colleagues, deepening understanding and fostering a supportive community. Digital platforms, including virtual patients and interactive modules, further enhance flexibility and self-directed learning. These active methods have been associated with improved knowledge retention, clinical reasoning and professional behaviours, while also promoting critical thinking, teamwork and lifelong learning. Implementation challenges relate to faculty development, resource allocation and alignment of assessment with learning objectives. Globally, institutions are adapting active approaches to local contexts, emphasising scalability and equity, and integrating interprofessional activities to reflect the collaborative nature of healthcare.

Active Learning Strategies in Medical Education publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in active learning strategies in medical education across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Problem-based learning (PBL): A student-centred approach in which learners collaboratively analyse and solve complex, real-world problems.
Team-based learning (TBL): A structured form of collaborative learning that combines pre-class preparation with individual and group assessments and application exercises.
Flipped classroom: An instructional model in which foundational content is studied independently, freeing class time for active discussion and practice.
Simulation-based education: The use of manikins, virtual reality or standardised patients to replicate clinical situations for safe skills practice and assessment.
Peer instruction: A method where students explain concepts to one another, often following short preparatory tasks or quizzes, to enhance understanding.
