Summary
Adolescent mental health is influenced by a complex interplay of biological, psychological and social factors during a period of rapid growth and identity formation. Depressive symptoms in this group—characterised by persistent low mood, loss of interest and impaired concentration—are increasingly recognised as a major contributor to functional impairment, school absenteeism and risk of self‐harm. Global surveys indicate that roughly one in four young people experience clinically relevant levels of depressive distress, with rates rising during the mid‐teen years. Contributory risk factors include academic pressure, family conflict, socioeconomic disadvantage and exposure to peer suffering, while protective factors encompass supportive relationships, mental health literacy and access to early intervention. Neurodevelopmental shifts in emotion regulation circuits coincide with this vulnerability window, underscoring the importance of timely screening, evidence‐based psychosocial interventions and culturally sensitive prevention strategies to avert long‐term morbidity.

Recent studies have quantified the lifetime prevalence and treatment gaps of mental disorders among young people in a national survey setting. One large‐scale diagnostic assessment using a structured interview framework reported that over 40% of youth experience at least one mental disorder across adolescence, with mood disorders affecting approximately 10% and anxiety disorders over 25% of the sample. Socio‐demographic correlates—including sex, parental education and economic status—emerged as significant predictors of both disorder onset and access to care, with fewer than 15% receiving appropriate treatment. These findings underscore the need for age‐appropriate, culturally tailored mental health services and policy measures to address unmet treatment needs in adolescent populations.
