Adolescent Stress Management and Mental Health
Summary
Adolescence is a formative period marked by rapid physical, cognitive and social changes that can precipitate elevated levels of perceived stress and heighten vulnerability to emerging mental health problems. Stressors range from academic pressures and peer relationships to family dynamics and socio-economic challenges. When unmanaged, these stressors may contribute to the onset of internalising difficulties such as anxiety and depression, as well as maladaptive coping patterns including rumination and avoidance. Conversely, effective stress management—encompassing cognitive–behavioural strategies, mindfulness techniques, peer support, and digital interventions—can bolster resilience, foster adaptive coping and mitigate risk. Schools and community settings serve as pivotal arenas for universal and targeted interventions, while family involvement and culturally sensitive approaches enhance uptake and sustainability. Contemporary research underscores the interplay between individual vulnerability, environmental exposures and systemic supports, highlighting the need for multifaceted, developmentally informed programmes that promote mental health literacy, self-regulation skills and early help-seeking.
