Aging and Quality of Life in Multiple Sclerosis

Summary

As the life expectancy of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) increases, understanding how ageing interacts with disease progression and quality of life has become a priority. Ageing with MS entails not only the accumulation of neurological impairment but also the reframing of personal identity, functional ability and psychosocial well-being. Physical challenges such as mobility decline, fatigue and comorbidities frequently compound the lifelong burden of demyelination and neurodegeneration. At the same time, many older adults with MS report adaptive strategies, resilience and a renewed sense of purpose that mitigate adversity. Emerging evidence underscores the importance of multidimensional care models that integrate neurological assessment, rehabilitation, mental health support and personalised self-management. Recognising the interplay between biological ageing and individual life narrative is essential to optimise health outcomes and foster meaningful engagement in later life for people living with MS.
