Agroforestry and Sustainable Management of Vitellaria Paradoxa

Summary

Vitellaria paradoxa, commonly known as the shea tree, is a keystone species of the Sahelo‐Sudanian parkland agroforestry systems that extend across West and Central Africa. Semi‐domesticated and long‐lived, the species underpins rural livelihoods by providing edible nuts, high‐value shea butter and a suite of ecosystem services, including soil stabilisation, biodiversity support and carbon sequestration. Traditional parkland management integrates shea with annual crops, allowing farmers to balance food production with tree conservation. Yet unsystematic regeneration, erratic fruit yields and the species’ prolonged juvenile period have restricted productivity gains. Sustainable management strategies now emphasise yield modelling, fallow rotations, tailored fertilisation and selective harvesting to optimise fruit production while safeguarding soil health. Concurrently, value‐chain initiatives seek to enhance equity for women collectors and processors, linking local cooperatives to regional and international markets for both edible fat and cosmetic applications. Emerging genomic tools promise to accelerate breeding for higher stearin content and climate resilience, aligning shea agroforestry with broader goals of sustainable land use and rural development.

Agroforestry and Sustainable Management of Vitellaria Paradoxa publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in agroforestry and sustainable management of vitellaria paradoxa across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Agroforestry parkland: A mixed land‐use system where scattered trees coexist with crops and livestock, combining ecological and agricultural functions.

Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP): A variation at a single base position in the genome, used as a molecular marker for genetic mapping and association studies.

Genome-wide association study (GWAS): An approach that scans the genome for SNPs linked to phenotypic traits, enabling the identification of genes underlying important characteristics.

Stearin content: The proportion of solid triglycerides (particularly C18:0–C18:1–C18:0) in shea butter that determines its firmness and applicability in food and cosmetic industries.

Triacylglycerol (TAG): The main constituent of plant oils, composed of three fatty acids esterified to a glycerol backbone, central to shea butter’s physicochemical properties.
