Summary
Amphibians occupy a unique ecological niche, oscillating between aquatic and terrestrial environments across their life cycle. As ectothermic vertebrates, their physiology, growth and survival are tightly coupled to ambient temperature and moisture regimes. Larval stages, typically aquatic tadpoles, forage on algae and detritus, while adult frogs and toads exploit a wider range of prey, from invertebrates to small vertebrates, thus linking aquatic productivity with terrestrial food webs. Reproductive behaviour in amphibians is extraordinarily diverse: many species employ prolonged breeding choruses over weeks, whereas others exhibit explosive breeding, synchronising massive aggregations to narrow environmental windows. Acoustic communication underpins mate attraction, territorial defence and species recognition, with males producing species-specific advertisement calls. Reproductive modes range from free-spawning in water to terrestrial egg deposition in foam nests or direct development, reflecting adaptations to local hydrology and predation risk. Phenological shifts in breeding, driven by rainfall, temperature and photoperiod, determine the timing of breeding migrations, calling activity and larval development. Habitat loss, climate change and emerging diseases have induced widespread declines, elevating the global significance of ecological research for conservation. Integrative studies, combining field observations, remote sensing and acoustic monitoring, are advancing our understanding of how environmental variability shapes amphibian life histories and informing habitat management, restoration and mitigation strategies worldwide.
