Summary

Phytotherapeutics—plant-derived preparations enriched with bioactive compounds—have garnered renewed interest for their multi-targeted anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Key examples include Devil’s claw (Harpagophytum spp.), turmeric (Curcuma longa) and willow bark (Salix alba), each containing characteristic constituents such as iridoid glycosides, curcuminoids and salicylates. These agents modulate inflammatory cascades by inhibiting proinflammatory enzymes, downregulating cytokine release and scavenging oxidative mediators. Preclinical studies have demonstrated efficacy in models of nociceptive and neuropathic pain, while emerging clinical evidence supports reductions in pain severity and improvements in function for musculoskeletal conditions. Advances in standardisation and novel delivery systems are enhancing bioavailability, and safety profiles are generally favourable when used at therapeutic doses. Integration of anti-inflammatory phytotherapeutics into multimodal pain management protocols holds promise for reducing reliance on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids, thereby addressing a critical public health need.
