Antioxidant and Hepatoprotective Properties of Phytochemicals
Summary
Phytochemicals are bioactive compounds derived from plants that exert protective effects against oxidative damage and support liver health. Key classes include polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenoids and essential oils, which neutralise reactive oxygen species and bolster endogenous antioxidant defences such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. These molecules mitigate lipid peroxidation, preserve membrane integrity and modulate inflammatory pathways, thereby reducing hepatocellular injury in models of chemical-induced toxicity and viral or metabolic stress. Beyond in vitro assays, animal studies have demonstrated that selected extracts can restore serum markers of liver function, ameliorate histopathological alterations and attenuate fibrosis. The global burden of liver disease underscores the need for safe, cost-effective interventions, and phytochemicals hold promise as nutraceuticals or adjuvants to conventional therapy. Moreover, applications extend to food preservation, where antioxidant and antimicrobial oils improve shelf life and safety. Ongoing research seeks to define structure–activity relationships, optimise bioavailability and translate preclinical findings into clinical benefit, fostering a multidisciplinary approach spanning food science, pharmacology and hepatology.

The graph below shows the total number of articles in antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties of phytochemicals across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Antioxidant: A molecule that inhibits oxidation and neutralises free radicals to prevent cellular damage.
Hepatoprotective: Describes an agent that preserves liver function and structure against toxic insults.
Oxidative stress: An imbalance between reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant defences.
Lipid peroxidation: The oxidative degradation of lipids, leading to cell membrane damage.
Phytochemical: A bioactive compound produced by plants that exerts health-promoting effects.
