Aphasia Communication and Rehabilitation Strategies
Summary
Aphasia is an acquired language disorder, most often resulting from stroke or brain injury, that disrupts the ability to speak, understand, read and write. Rehabilitation strategies aim to restore linguistic skills and enhance everyday interaction through a combination of impairment-focused and activity-based approaches. Impairment-focused methods address specific linguistic deficits via drill-based exercises targeting naming, sentence construction or comprehension. Activity-based and participation-centred approaches, such as conversation therapy, emphasise real-world communication by involving both the person with aphasia and their conversation partners. Advances in technology have introduced online speech therapy systems and virtual reality platforms to expand access to tailored interventions. Increasingly, rehabilitation research explores multimodal communication—combining speech, gesture, writing and technology—to support compensatory strategies. Effective rehabilitation integrates evidence-based protocols, individual goal setting and ongoing assessment of functional communication, fostering social participation and quality of life across diverse global settings.
