Assertiveness and School Dropout Dynamics
Summary
Assertiveness is a core social–communication competency by which young people learn to express their needs, set boundaries and negotiate peer and adult relationships. Emerging research indicates that a student’s capacity for assertive engagement can shape their sense of belonging and academic resilience. School dropout remains a global concern, with rates varying across socioeconomic contexts. Recent theoretical frameworks highlight that insufficient self-advocacy skills, deficits in social problem-solving and limited capacity to negotiate transitional stressors amplify the risk of disengagement. Assertiveness intersects with dropout dynamics by mediating students’ ability to seek support, resist peer pressure and navigate changes such as school mobility or curricular demands. Interventions designed to foster assertive behaviours have shown promise in enhancing interpersonal communication, bolstering coping strategies and ultimately reducing the likelihood of premature school leaving. These findings underscore the importance of integrating assertiveness training within broader educational policies and student-support systems, offering practical applications ranging from classroom-based workshops to peer-mentoring programmes aimed at sustaining academic persistence.
