Assessment Practices in Physical Education

Assessment in physical education serves multiple purposes: gauging pupils’ mastery of movement skills, understanding theoretical concepts, and fostering lifelong engagement in physical activity. Traditional summative approaches, such as end-of-module tests and graded performance tasks, remain widespread but can privilege demonstration of isolated skills over holistic learning. In contrast, formative strategies emphasise ongoing feedback, pupil self-reflection and peer dialogue, transforming assessment into a tool for learning rather than merely a measure of achievement. Authentic assessment methods—such as game-based tasks, project portfolios and real-world challenges—seek to mirror the complex, context-dependent nature of movement and sport. Alignment between curriculum objectives, instructional practices and assessment criteria is critical to ensure validity and fairness. Recent discourse highlights the need for assessment literacy among teachers and preservice educators, so that assessment design, enactment and interpretation become coherent and culturally responsive. Non-linear pedagogies, which recognise individual variation in learning trajectories, call for flexible, criterion-referenced approaches that adapt to each learner’s developmental pathway. Globally, there is growing interest in leveraging digital tools and multimedia feedback to enhance pupil engagement and to document progress over time, as well as in embedding equity-focused practices to ensure that all pupils can demonstrate their strengths in diverse ways.
