Audit Opinions and Financial Distress Evaluation
Summary
Audit opinions represent the auditor’s formal conclusion on the reliability of a company’s financial statements and, in particular, on its capacity to continue as a going concern. Such opinions serve as a critical early warning system for investors, creditors and regulators by signalling potential financial distress. Research in this field has traced the evolution of audit opinion classifications—ranging from unqualified to qualified, adverse and disclaimer opinions—and examined their predictive value for corporate survival. Analyses have explored the determinants of modified opinions, such as intellectual capital intensity and governance structures, and assessed how auditors’ judgments interact with firms’ financial ratios, disclosure quality and non-financial indicators. Advances in machine learning and natural language processing have further enhanced prediction models by incorporating textual cues from audit reports. The global significance of this work lies in its practical application: robust evaluation of audit opinions underpins market discipline, informs credit risk assessment and supports policy interventions aimed at reducing systemic vulnerability to corporate failures.

Technical terms
Audit opinion: The official judgement issued by an auditor on whether a company’s financial statements are free from material misstatement and fairly present its financial position.
Modified audit opinion: An audit opinion that departs from an unqualified opinion, encompassing qualified, adverse or disclaimer opinions, typically signalling concerns about specific financial statement items or the auditor’s inability to obtain sufficient evidence.
Going concern: The assumption that a company will continue operations for the foreseeable future; a going-concern opinion indicates substantial doubt about that assumption.
Financial distress: A condition in which a firm struggles to meet its financial obligations, often preceding bankruptcy or restructuring.
Earnings management: The use of accounting techniques to produce financial reports that may mislead stakeholders about the underlying economic performance of a firm.
