Autoethnography and Multimedia Storytelling in Critical Pedagogy

Autoethnography, the practice of using the self as primary data to explore cultural and social phenomena, has gained prominence as a transformative tool within critical pedagogy. When combined with multimedia storytelling—encompassing video, interactive digital platforms, gaming, visual art and performance—this approach fosters reflective praxis and cultivates a participatory learning environment. By integrating personal narrative, sensory experience and technological affordances, educators and learners co‐construct knowledge that challenges entrenched power relations, foregrounds marginalised voices and encourages collective agency. Across disciplines, these methods have been employed to make visible the embodied and affective dimensions of learning, to disrupt dominant narratives and to enact decolonial and anti-oppressive pedagogies. From disability arts inquiry to queer community projects and body-affirming fitness collectives, practitioners have demonstrated how self-narrative and multimedia artefacts can animate critical inquiry, enhance relationality and open new channels for social transformation.
