Summary

Birds exhibit a remarkable array of reproductive tactics that optimise parental investment and offspring survival across diverse environments. Key strategies encompass variation in clutch size, egg-laying order and hatching synchrony, each influencing the emergence of age and size hierarchies among nestlings. In many altricial species, parents deliberately induce hatching asynchrony to create a natural buffer against food scarcity, allowing larger, earlier‐hatched chicks to outcompete their smaller siblings when resources are limited. Conversely, synchronised broods often yield higher overall fledging success where food supply is stable and predictable. Nestling competition manifests through behavioural aggression, selective parental provisioning and, in extreme cases, sibling cannibalism or facultative siblicide. Such interactions are shaped by species-specific life-history traits—such as foraging specialisation, parental effort and developmental pace—as well as by ecological factors including prey availability, habitat seasonality and climatic variability. Understanding these dynamics is central to delineating parent–offspring conflict, the evolution of clutch overproduction and mechanisms of brood reduction. Insights from this field carry significant implications for conservation practice, particularly in the management of endangered taxa and in forecasting avian responses to global environmental change.

Recent studies have contrasted hatching asynchrony and nestling provisioning in two closely related tit species that differ in foraging specialisation. Under fluctuating food availability, the more specialised species maintained a broad hatching spread, resulting in pronounced size hierarchies, whereas the generalist species avoided pronounced asynchrony by flexibly adjusting feeding rates in line with prey abundance. This work demonstrates that foraging efficiency and life-history traits interact to determine whether hatching asynchrony serves as an adaptive buffer against environmental unpredictability or is minimised in favour of synchrony.
