Summary
Balantidium coli is a ciliated protozoan parasite predominantly associated with pigs but capable of infecting a range of domestic mammals. Its life cycle alternates between a motile trophozoite stage in the host’s large intestine and a resistant cyst form shed in faeces. Infection occurs via oral ingestion of cyst-contaminated water, feed or environmental surfaces. In pigs, heavy infestations may produce dysentery, weight loss and reduced growth, whereas in other livestock such as cattle the organism often remains commensal but can contribute to diarrhoeal disease under stress or co-infection. Zoonotic transmission to humans is a recognised concern, particularly where hygiene and slaughtering practices are suboptimal. Global surveys reveal that farming system, animal age and gender influence carriage rates, while herd management and sanitation determine outbreak risk. Advances in diagnostic microscopy and molecular assays have improved detection, yet challenges remain in controlling environmental contamination and limiting interspecies spread. Integrated approaches combining herd health monitoring, improved housing conditions and targeted surveillance are essential to mitigate economic losses, protect animal welfare and reduce public health hazards.
