Historically embedded in spa traditions across Europe, Asia and the Americas, modern balneotherapy integrates controlled bath regimens, mud-pack treatments and hydrostatic exercise to address osteoarthritis, chronic low back pain, fibromyalgia and related musculoskeletal disorders. The benefits derive from synergistic mechanisms: heat-induced vasodilation and enhanced circulation, hydrostatic pressure reducing joint load, chemical constituents such as sulphur compounds or trace radon imparting anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions, and activation of neuroendocrine pathways including heat shock protein responses. Clinical outcomes include significant reductions in pain intensity, improvements in joint mobility and sleep quality, and enhanced patient-reported physical function.
