Behavioral Integrity in Leadership and Organizational Behavior
Summary
Behavioural integrity refers to the congruence between a leader’s professed values and their actual conduct, forming a foundational element of trust within organisations. When leaders consistently act in line with their commitments, they promote an ethical climate, foster employee engagement and stimulate discretionary effort. This alignment between word and deed operates at multiple levels—individual (leader consistency), relational (follower perceptions) and systemic (organisational norms and policies)—and draws on social learning, social exchange and identity theories to explain how consistent leadership behaviour shapes cultural values and performance. High behavioural integrity not only reinforces organisational citizenship behaviours and innovation but also enhances collective resilience in times of change. Conversely, breaches of integrity can undermine trust, erode commitment and precipitate ethical lapses, highlighting its global significance across sectors from corporate enterprises to public institutions and non-profit initiatives.
