Summary
Human responses to infectious disease threats are shaped by a complex interplay of individual cognitions, social norms and structural factors. Non-pharmaceutical interventions such as hand hygiene, mask wearing, physical distancing and voluntary self-isolation have been central to containment strategies for respiratory pathogens. Uptake and maintenance of these measures depend on perceived susceptibility and severity of disease, confidence in one’s own ability to carry out protective actions (self-efficacy), and beliefs about the efficacy and costs of those actions. Social influences, including trust in authorities, peer behaviour and cultural norms, further modulate adherence, while broader socioeconomic conditions determine access to resources and the feasibility of recommended behaviours. Digital platforms and mobile applications have emerged as tools to prompt and support health-protective habits, yet their effectiveness varies with levels of engagement and contextual fit. Recent work has also highlighted the importance of quantifying social vulnerability to identify groups at greatest risk of non-compliance and to tailor interventions accordingly. A synthesis of behavioural theory and empirical data is crucial for the design of interventions that not only encourage initial adoption but also sustain protective practices in diverse global settings.
