Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Properties in Citrus Fruits
Summary
Citrus fruits are valued both as staple components of the human diet and as sources of diverse bioactive compounds with potent antioxidant properties. Key phytochemicals include flavonoids (notably flavanones such as hesperidin and naringin, and unique polymethoxylated flavones), carotenoids (for example β-carotene and lycopene), limonoids, terpenes and phenolic acids, alongside high levels of vitamin C. These molecules exert free-radical scavenging, metal-chelating and enzyme-modulating effects that underlie protective roles against oxidative stress, inflammation and dysregulated metabolism. The profile and concentration of these compounds vary with species, cultivar, fruit tissue (peel vs pulp), maturity and post-harvest handling. Practical applications span nutraceutical development, functional foods, pharmaceutical leads and the valorisation of citrus waste streams—particularly peels—for natural antioxidant extracts. Collectively, this body of work underscores the global importance of citrus phytochemistry in supporting human health and food sustainability.
Research from Nature Portfolio
A seminal metabolomic investigation employed non-targeted profiling across multiple Citrus species and tissues to map over 7,400 metabolic signals, identifying 117 distinct flavonoids including 39 polymethoxylated derivatives and various glycosylated forms. Tissue-specific analysis revealed that the flavedo (outer peel) preferentially accumulates polymethoxylated flavonoids, whereas O-glycosylated flavonoids are broadly distributed. Hierarchical clustering of germplasm samples aligned precisely with species designations, laying a framework for targeted breeding strategies and biofortification of antioxidant constituents.
Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Properties in Citrus Fruits publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in bioactive compounds and antioxidant properties in citrus fruits across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Flavonoids: A class of polyphenolic compounds with subgroups such as flavanones, flavones and flavonols, known for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
Polymethoxylated flavones: Flavonoids with multiple methoxy groups that confer increased lipophilicity and antioxidant potency, abundant in citrus peels.
Carotenoids: Pigmented terpenoid compounds (e.g. β-carotene, lycopene) acting as antioxidants and vitamin A precursors.
Limonoids: Triterpenoid derivatives unique to citrus, contributing bitterness and exhibiting antioxidant and anticancer potential.
Terpenes: Volatile organic compounds responsible for citrus aroma, with noted antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
Flavedo: The coloured outer layer of citrus peel, rich in oil glands and bioactive secondary metabolites.
Antioxidant capacity: A measure of the ability of compounds or extracts to neutralise reactive oxygen species via distinct chemical assays.
