Summary
Paullinia cupana, commonly known as guaraná, is a climbing plant endemic to the Amazon basin whose seeds are uniquely rich in methylxanthines and polyphenolic compounds. The principal bioactive constituents include caffeine, theobromine, catechins, epicatechins and a diverse array of proanthocyanidins. These molecules confer pronounced antioxidant capacity through free‐radical scavenging and metal‐chelation, alongside modulatory effects on key metabolic enzymes. Extensive phytochemical profiling has shown that procyanidin dimers and trimers may inhibit enzymes linked to carbohydrate digestion, while caffeine and catechins influence lipid metabolism and central nervous system stimulation. Ethnopharmacological traditions have long employed guaraná for its tonic, cognitive and thermogenic properties. Contemporary research extends these applications into cardiometabolic health, neuroprotection and dermatological delivery systems. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that guaraná extracts reduce low‐density lipoprotein oxidation, inhibit alpha‐glucosidase activity, and modulate inflammatory cytokines. Formulation advances, including liposomal encapsulation, seek to enhance stability and target delivery in topical and oral preparations. Collectively, these findings underscore the global potential of Paullinia cupana as a source of multifunctional nutraceuticals, functional ingredients in food supplements and lead compounds for novel pharmacological agents.
