Recent studies have explored the cytotoxic and antiviral potential of two Yemeni species, Jatropha variegata and Jatropha spinosa. Methanolic extracts of roots, stems and aerial parts were fractionated and assessed in vitro against human breast, hepatic and lung cancer cell lines, achieving sub-microgram per millilitre IC50 values that outperformed standard chemotherapeutics. Parallel antiviral assays demonstrated strong inhibition of herpes simplex virus type 2 and influenza A H1N1, with IC50 values well below those of acyclovir and ribavirin.
