Biodiesel Production from Tall Oil Feedstocks
Summary
Biodiesel production from tall oil feedstocks harnesses a renewable by-product of the kraft pulping process, known as crude tall oil (CTO), which contains a complex mixture of resin acids and free fatty acids. Following initial separation and distillation steps, tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) are obtained and converted into fatty acid methyl esters via transesterification. Pre-treatment to reduce acid value is often required prior to base-catalysed processes, whereas one-step heterogeneous or enzymatic techniques offer routes to high-yield esterification without extensive feedstock refinement. Conversion conditions—such as methanol-to-oil ratio, catalyst type and temperature—are optimised to maximise yield and minimise reaction time. Resulting biodiesel meets key fuel quality standards and exhibits a favourable emissions profile, reducing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter, although oxides of nitrogen may rise without further treatment. Global interest in CTO as a biodiesel feedstock is driven by its non-food status, wide availability from established pulp-and-paper operations and potential to integrate into biorefinery value chains. Legislative incentives for renewable transport fuels and life-cycle assessments that demonstrate carbon savings further support its development. However, projections indicate that surging biofuel demand could outpace CTO supply by the end of the decade, underscoring the need for coordinated resource management, alternative raw materials and policy frameworks to sustain production at scale.

Biodiesel Production from Tall Oil Feedstocks publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in biodiesel production from tall oil feedstocks across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Crude tall oil (CTO): A viscous by-product of the kraft pulping process, rich in resin and fatty acids used as a biorefinery feedstock.
Tall oil fatty acids (TOFA): A fraction of CTO obtained through distillation, primarily composed of oleic and linoleic acids, serving as biodiesel precursors.
Transesterification: The chemical reaction in which fatty acids or triglycerides are converted into methyl esters (biodiesel) by reaction with an alcohol and a catalyst.
Homogeneous catalysis: A catalytic process in which the catalyst and reactants exist in the same phase, often involving liquid acids or bases.
Heterogeneous catalysis: A catalytic process where the catalyst is in a different phase (typically solid) from the reactants, facilitating separation and recycling.
