Summary

Freshwater crabs of the family Aeglidae, represented solely by the genus Aegla, are endemic to southern South America and occupy a diversity of stream and riverine habitats. With over 80 recognised species, these anomuran decapods display remarkable morphological and ecological variation, from cave‐adapted forms to species inhabiting pristine montane waterways. Their narrow distributions and specialised habitat requirements have rendered many aeglids highly vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures. Key threats include water pollution from agricultural, urban and industrial effluents, fragmentation of river systems by dams and water extraction, and removal of riparian vegetation. Phylogenetic studies reveal deep lineages reflecting past climatic and geological events, while population assessments emphasise that around two‐thirds of Aegla species qualify for elevated risk categories under international conservation criteria. Conservation strategies hinge on integrated taxonomic resolution, habitat protection, pollution mitigation and long‐term monitoring using physiological biomarkers. Comparative analyses across multiple taxa demonstrate that water conductivity and pH exhibit significant phylogenetic structuring, whereas other physicochemical parameters vary more plastically. Assessment of metal accumulation in hepatopancreatic tissue, alongside measures of antioxidant defence—including metallothionein‐like proteins and capacity against peroxyl radicals—reveals that oxidative stress responses are both environmentally driven and constrained by evolutionary history. Notably, variation in antioxidant capacity against peroxyl radicals emerges as a promising biomarker for monitoring habitat contamination and species sensitivity, offering a systematic framework for cross‐species conservation monitoring.
