Summary
Brazilian savannas, collectively known as the Cerrado, represent one of the Earth’s most biodiverse tropical grassland–woodland mosaics. Characterised by a complex interplay of climate seasonality, varied soil types and recurrent fire regimes, these ecosystems support over 12,000 plant species, of which more than 40 percent are found nowhere else. Vegetation ranges from open grasslands through shrub-dominated “campo sujo” to tall woodlands (cerradão), forming fine-scale mosaics shaped by soil fertility gradients and hydrological features such as palm swamps (veredas) and seasonally flooded peatlands. Floristic composition and structural attributes vary sharply across central and peripheral regions, reflecting high β-diversity and the influence of neighbouring biomes such as the Atlantic Forest and Amazon. These savannas deliver critical ecosystem services—including carbon sequestration, water regulation and pollinator habitat—and harbour significant genetic resources for agriculture. Rapid land-use change driven by mechanised farming and pasture expansion threatens native communities, emphasising the urgency of integrated conservation strategies that recognise ecological heterogeneity and maintain functional connectivity across landscapes.
