Summary
Madagascar harbours one of the most extraordinary assemblages of terrestrial life on Earth, with over 80 percent of its species found nowhere else. This endemic richness spans microbes, plants, invertebrates and vertebrates, shaped by the island’s long isolation, complex topography and climatic gradients. Molecular phylogenetics has revealed multiple waves of colonization from Africa, Asia and surrounding islands, followed by in situ adaptive radiations. Iconic examples include lemurs, mantellid frogs and the hyperdiverse cophyline microhylids, each showing remarkable microendemism where closely related lineages occupy adjacent mountain blocks or forest fragments. Phylogenetic studies have refined divergence times, exposed cryptic species, and uncovered repeated instances of miniaturisation and niche convergence at the extremes of body size. Integrative approaches combining DNA barcoding, multilocus sequencing, bioacoustics and morphology are closing the Linnean and Wallacean shortfalls—gaps in species discovery and distributional knowledge—while informing conservation prioritisation. The global significance of Malagasy biodiversity extends from insights into island biogeography and evolutionary ecology to practical applications in conservation genetics, ecosystem management and bioprospecting. Safeguarding this living laboratory requires a synthesis of taxonomic revision, refined phylogeographic mapping and targeted protection of microendemic hotspots under threat from habitat fragmentation and climate change.
