Summary

Plantation ecosystems, typically established for timber, fibre or bioenergy production, now cover millions of hectares worldwide and represent one of the most extensive forms of land‐use change. Although often depicted as homogeneous stands of non‐native tree species, modern plantations can support a range of native flora and fauna when managed with biodiversity objectives. Key conservation strategies include retaining remnant patches of native vegetation, maintaining structural complexity through understorey management and mixed‐species plantings, and ensuring landscape connectivity via buffer zones and corridors. Such measures can bolster species richness, facilitate genetic flow and enhance ecosystem services—from pollination and pest control to soil stabilisation and carbon sequestration. Research has revealed that plantation age, spatial configuration and the presence of invasive competitors or predators critically influence community composition. Moreover, a focus on both local habitat quality and broader socioecological factors, such as climate variability and land‐use history, informs adaptive management that reconciles production goals with biodiversity conservation. As global demand for wood products grows, integrating ecological principles into plantation design and operation offers a pathway to mitigate biodiversity loss while sustaining socio‐economic benefits.
