Summary
Agricultural landscapes represent complex mosaics of cultivated fields, semi‐natural habitats and remnant woodlands. Biodiversity dynamics in these settings emerge from the interplay of land‐use intensity, habitat fragmentation, edge effects and landscape configuration. Intensification and monoculture reduce habitat heterogeneity, leading to declines in species richness, functional diversity and the provision of ecosystem services such as pollination, natural pest control and nutrient cycling. Conversely, diversified cropping systems, retention of hedgerows and field margins, and the restoration of semi‐natural patches can enhance habitat connectivity, support multitrophic interactions and buffer populations against environmental stress. Spatiotemporal variation in organismal responses—from soil microbes to pollinators and predators—reflects both local management (crop rotation, pesticide application) and broader landscape processes (patch size, matrix permeability). Understanding these drivers is critical for designing agri‐environment schemes that reconcile food production with conservation goals across temperate and tropical regions.

A seasonal study of predatory ground beetles around the interface between arable fields and adjacent woodlots revealed pronounced shifts in both abundance and species richness by season. Open‐habitat species peaked near boundaries in winter and early spring, while forest‐affiliated species aggregated within woodlots except during early spring, when they too concentrated at edges. Overall species richness was highest in arable fields adjacent to woodlots, highlighting the importance of intermediate habitats for sustaining predator diversity. These findings underscore the role of field‐woodlot boundaries in augmenting natural pest‐control services and suggest that the spatial arrangement of semi‐natural elements can be managed to optimise beneficial arthropod populations.
