Biomass Energy Utilization and Conversion Technologies

Summary

Biomass energy encompasses the production of heat, electricity and biofuels from organic materials derived from plants, agricultural residues, forestry by-products and dedicated energy crops. Its utilisation is founded on established pathways such as biochemical conversion—where enzymes or microorganisms ferment sugars to yield ethanol, biogas or other bio-based chemicals—and thermochemical conversion, which employs controlled heat treatments including gasification, pyrolysis and combustion to produce syngas, biochar or heat. Recent advances have focused on feedstock optimisation through genetic and agronomic improvements, pretreatment techniques to enhance the accessibility of lignocellulosic polymers, novel catalysts to lower reaction temperatures and intensify conversion rates, and integration of circular-economy principles to valorise all process streams. The deployment of densification processes—pelletisation or briquetting—has improved transport and storage characteristics, while digitalisation and advanced monitoring systems have strengthened supply-chain resilience. At the intersection of sustainability and energy security, biomass conversion technologies are now being deployed in decentralised combined-heat-and-power installations, small-scale biorefineries and large-scale industrial complexes. These systems not only mitigate greenhouse-gas emissions by displacing fossil fuels but also offer socio-economic benefits in rural regions, from employment creation to waste-management solutions. Looking ahead, hybrid processes that couple biochemical and thermochemical steps, electro-biochemical systems, and integration with carbon capture and utilisation are emerging trends poised to elevate the global impact of biomass as a cornerstone of a low-carbon energy portfolio.

Research from Nature Portfolio

Recent studies have explored the influence of biomass composition on biochar performance. In one investigation, termite-processed Pinus elliottii particleboard and associated droppings were pyrolysed under varied temperatures to assess how lignin and cellulose content affects biochar properties. Results demonstrated that lignin-rich material yields biochar with higher fixed carbon and surface area, which markedly enhances adsorption capacities for hexavalent chromium. Spectroscopic analyses linked molecular structural changes during pyrolysis to adsorption performance, underscoring the pivotal role of lignin in tailoring biochar for water-purification applications.

Biomass Energy Utilization and Conversion Technologies publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in biomass energy utilization and conversion technologies across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Pyrolysis: Thermal decomposition of biomass in the absence of oxygen, yielding biochar, bio-oils and syngas.

Gasification: Partial oxidation of biomass at high temperatures to produce a combustible mixture of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane (syngas).

Fermentation: Biological conversion of sugars into biofuels or chemicals by microorganisms under anaerobic conditions.

Biochar: Carbon-rich solid residue from pyrolysis, valued for soil amendment and contaminant adsorption.

Combined heat and power (CHP): Simultaneous generation of heat and electricity from a single biomass conversion unit to maximise energy efficiency.
