Biopsychosocial Approaches in Health and Illness

Summary

The biopsychosocial approach recognises that health and illness emerge from intricate interactions among biological processes, individual psychological states and broader social contexts. This perspective extends beyond the reductionist biomedical model by incorporating mental health, cultural influences, socioeconomic conditions and relational dynamics into both research and clinical practice. Over recent decades, biopsychosocial frameworks have been applied to the management of chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, psychiatric disorders and rehabilitation, yielding more nuanced understandings of disease trajectories and treatment responses. By emphasising person‐centred care, interdisciplinary collaboration and the social determinants of health, these approaches foster more equitable and effective interventions, ranging from community‐based prevention programmes to integrated digital health solutions. Current research continues to refine theoretical models, improve measurement of psychosocial variables and translate mechanistic insights into real‐world therapies.
