Summary
Marine sponges are ancient and ubiquitous filter-feeding invertebrates that play a pivotal role in coastal ecosystem functioning. By drawing large volumes of water through their aquiferous systems, they remove particulates, organic matter and microorganisms, while hosting diverse symbiotic microbial communities. These traits render sponges valuable agents of bioremediation, capable of degrading organic pollutants, filtering pathogenic bacteria and accumulating heavy metals. Their associated microbes often perform specialised transformations—such as intracellular mineralisation of toxins—that complement the host’s filtering capacity. In parallel, sponges serve as sensitive bioindicators of environmental quality: fluctuations in their tissue concentrations of trace elements or pathogens reflect anthropogenic inputs and ecological shifts. Cultivation of sponges in integrated mariculture further permits the up-scaling of both pollutant removal and biomass production for bioactive compounds, collagen or chitin. The convergence of physiological filtration, microbial detoxification and environmental responsiveness positions sponges at the forefront of sustainable strategies for water purification and coastal monitoring on a global scale.

Investigations into sponge–microbe partnerships have revealed that certain symbiotic bacteria perform metal sequestration on behalf of their hosts. A seminal study demonstrated that a bacterium within a marine sponge mineralises arsenic and barium on intracellular vesicles, effectively acting as a detoxifying organ. This finding underscores the importance of the microbiome in sponge-based bioremediation of pervasive environmental toxins and illustrates how microbial physiology can be harnessed to intercept and immobilise metals that would otherwise enter marine food webs.
