Summary

Collisions between aircraft and wildlife, most notably birds, present a multifaceted challenge to aviation safety, operational efficiency and environmental stewardship. Bird strike risk assessment integrates data on species presence, behaviour and habitat use with aircraft performance characteristics to quantify the likelihood and severity of strikes. Wildlife hazard management employs a suite of preventive measures—ranging from habitat modification and exclusion fencing to behavioural deterrents and operational advisories—to reduce both strike frequency and impact. Recent advances have emphasised standardised risk frameworks, improved reporting protocols and spatial analyses of attractive sites. Global coordination, adaptive management and integration of ecological principles have emerged as critical for designing site-specific plans that balance safety imperatives with conservation objectives.

One study evaluated a federal wildlife hazards management programme at joint-use airports in the contiguous United States. By exploiting variation in programme rollout and reporting quality, researchers demonstrated that intervention considerably improved strike reporting and, where pre-existing systems were robust, led to a measurable reduction in economically damaging events. Economic benefits of the programme were estimated at seven times its costs, underscoring the value of systematic management and rigorous observational methods for causal inference in aviation risk reduction.

A second contribution proposed a standardised birdstrike risk model validated at a civil airport in northern China. This framework assigns species to risk levels according to five factors: abundance, body mass, flight altitude, flocking tendency and temporal activity. Comparison with a decade of national incident records confirmed strong overlap between high-risk species and actual strike data. The model’s simplicity and reliance on open-source principles render it readily transferable to airports worldwide, even in data-scarce regions.
