Summary
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty, is performed worldwide to alleviate physical discomfort, improve aesthetic proportions and enhance psychosocial well-being. Outcomes extend beyond simple volumetric change to encompass relief from back, neck and shoulder pain, improved posture and mobility, and reductions in skin irritation. Quality of life gains are reported in domains of self-image, sexual health and daily functioning, with many patients describing heightened confidence and reduced anxiety following surgery. Technical refinements in pedicle design and parenchymal preservation aim to balance aesthetic symmetry with nipple-areolar viability and potential future lactation. Complication rates vary with patient factors such as body mass index and smoking status, while preservation of subareolar parenchyma appears critical for breastfeeding success. Economic analyses highlight substantial cost offsets through reduced healthcare utilisation and improved productivity. Despite these advances, further high-quality, prospective studies are required to refine patient selection, optimise long-term satisfaction and guide public health policy on equitable access to this intervention.
