The built environment encompasses the physical layout and design of urban and rural areas—comprising land-use patterns, street networks, transport infrastructure and parking provision—and exerts a profound influence on both vehicle ownership and the choices individuals make about travel. Key attributes include density (the number of residents or jobs per area), diversity (mix of land uses such as housing, employment and services), design (street connectivity, block size and pedestrian facilities), destination accessibility (proximity to daily needs) and distance to transit. Higher density and mixed‐use environments tend to reduce private car dependency by shortening trip lengths and enhancing the viability of walking, cycling and public transport. Well-connected street networks further support active travel, while generous parking supply and low-cost curbside spaces encourage car ownership and driving. These relationships are not always linear: certain thresholds in density or transit access must be reached before significant reductions in car use occur. Spatial interactions, whereby one neighbourhood’s built form influences adjacent areas, can amplify or dampen these effects. Globally, interventions such as transit-oriented development, integrated land‐use and transport planning, travel demand management and parking regulation have demonstrated practical benefits in curbing motorisation and promoting sustainable mobility.
