Canine Cardiology and Mitral Valve Disease Management
Summary
Canine cardiology encompasses the study, diagnosis and treatment of heart disorders in dogs, with degenerative mitral valve disease representing the most prevalent form of acquired valvulopathy. Myxomatous changes in the mitral leaflets lead to regurgitation, volume overload and progressive chamber remodelling. Early stages may be asymptomatic yet detectable by subtle auscultatory findings or echocardiographic measurements such as the left atrium-to-aorta ratio. As disease advances, clinical signs of congestive heart failure emerge, including exercise intolerance, cough and ascites. Management strategies span from surveillance of preclinical patients using biomarkers and imaging to medical therapy aimed at delaying heart failure and alleviating congestion. In selected cases, surgical repair or replacement of the mitral valve has been shown to improve survival and quality of life. Consensus guidelines inform practitioners on staging, pharmacotherapy and dietary modification, while emerging research explores novel biomarkers, proteomic signatures and interventional techniques. Together, these approaches underpin a global framework for improving outcomes in affected dogs and offer translational insights for human mitral valve disease.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Recent clinical data have evaluated the safety of long-distance air travel in dogs with stable mitral valve disease undergoing repair. In one multicentre survey, up to eighty small-breed dogs flew in the passenger cabin to receive specialised mitral valve surgery. Survival after the flight exceeded 97 percent, and postoperative outcomes—including surgical survival rates and hospitalisation durations—were comparable between overseas and domestic patients. These findings support the feasibility of intercontinental referral for advanced cardiac procedures and stress the importance of optimised medical preparation and in-flight monitoring for dogs with chronic valvular disease.
Canine Cardiology and Mitral Valve Disease Management publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in canine cardiology and mitral valve disease management across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD): Degenerative condition characterised by progressive thickening and dysfunction of the mitral valve leaflets leading to regurgitation.
Proteomic profiling: Analytical technique to quantify and compare large sets of proteins in biological samples to identify disease-associated biomarkers.
Pimobendan: Oral inodilator drug that enhances myocardial contractility and causes vasodilation, used to delay heart failure in dogs with MMVD.
Left atrium-to-aorta ratio (LA:Ao): Echocardiographic measurement comparing left atrial size to aortic diameter, used to assess cardiac enlargement in valvular disease.
