Canine cruciate ligament injuries, most commonly involving the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), represent a leading cause of pelvic limb lameness and osteoarthritis in dogs worldwide. Degenerative weakening of ligament fibres often precedes rupture, while non-contact trauma during routine activity can precipitate acute failure. Clinical presentation ranges from subtle gait changes to marked instability and pain. Management strategies encompass conservative approaches—principally physiotherapy and weight management—for small or geriatric patients, and a variety of surgical interventions for larger or active dogs. Intracapsular and extracapsular repair techniques seek to mimic native ligament function, whereas tibial osteotomy procedures, such as tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO), alter joint geometry to neutralise shear forces. Postoperative rehabilitation, including controlled exercise, proprioceptive training and muscle strengthening, plays a crucial role in restoring function and reducing long-term joint degeneration.

Recent studies have applied longitudinal cohort analysis to identify developmental and phenotypic factors that influence lifetime cruciate ligament survival. In a purebred cohort at high genetic risk, early gonadectomy within the first two years was linked to an increased incidence of CCL rupture, bilateral injury and accelerated onset of failure. Conversely, shorter adult stature and the production of offspring in females were associated with reduced susceptibility. These findings suggest a critical endocrine influence during development and introduce a framework for subtyping cruciate disease, potentially guiding future genetic and epidemiological investigations.
