Summary

Carabid beetles are a diverse group of ground‐dwelling insects that provide multiple ecosystem services in arable landscapes, most notably the regulation of invertebrate pests and the predation of weed seeds. Their effectiveness depends on species composition, seasonal activity and landscape structure, with heterogeneous habitats such as field margins and diversified crop architectures promoting both abundance and functional complementarity. In intensively managed systems, community composition can be simplified, reducing redundancy and destabilising seed‐predation functions. Conversely, practices that enhance microhabitat heterogeneity—such as unsown rows or retention of grassy margins—favour larger‐bodied and more specialised carabids, thereby boosting predation rates without yield penalties. At continental scales, the resilience of weed‐seedbank regulation has been demonstrated even in the face of varying alternative prey, emphasising the broad relevance of carabid‐mediated biocontrol. Integrating knowledge of trophic interactions and landscape connectivity is essential for designing sustainable management strategies that harness carabid biodiversity for crop protection and ecological intensification.
