Cavitation Dynamics in Diesel Fuel Injection Systems
Summary
The injection of diesel fuel at ultra-high pressures into the combustion chamber requires precision-engineered nozzles to achieve optimal atomisation and combustion efficiency. Under rapid pressure drops, local liquid pressure falls below the vapour pressure, leading to vapour bubble formation—known as cavitation—within the nozzle orifices. Controlled cavitation can enhance spray break-up by generating micro-turbulence and reducing droplet size, yet excessive or asymmetric cavitation can erode nozzle surfaces, destabilise spray patterns and degrade injector longevity. The complex interplay of nozzle geometry, fuel physicochemical properties, flow turbulence and transient valve dynamics determines the onset, development and collapse of cavitation structures. Recent advances in high-speed imaging, synchrotron X-ray tomography and computational modelling have elucidated three-dimensional cavitation morphologies, the influence of viscoelastic and thermal effects, and the correlation between micro-scale vapour cavities and macroscale spray performance. These insights are driving the design of next-generation diesel injectors with optimised nozzle geometry and tailored fuel formulations, contributing to reduced emissions, improved fuel economy and extended component durability across a broad range of operating conditions.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Advanced neutron imaging has provided unprecedented quantification of cavitation within abrupt orifice geometries, revealing distinct vapour topologies at micrometre resolution. This work demonstrated how fluid rheology, modified by viscoelastic additives, shifts cavitation from diffuse cloud structures to more localised vortical cavities, offering quantitative metrics for vapour volume and cavity distribution. Complementary synchrotron X-ray tomography studies have achieved time-resolved, in-situ 3D visualisation of two-phase flow inside steel injection nozzles at engine-like pressures. These experiments highlighted the role of asymmetric inlet corner profiles and microscopic surface features in governing flow separation, cavity morphology and transient development timescales, furnishing critical data for validating high-fidelity computational models.
