Adjusted energy expenditure showed no clear protection against short-term changes in body composition, challenging assumptions that low energy expenditure is a primary driver of weight gain over brief intervals.

Energy balance: The equilibrium between energy intake from diet and energy expended through basal metabolism, thermogenesis and physical activity.
Total energy expenditure (TEE): The aggregate of resting energy expenditure, the thermic effect of food and activity-related energy expenditure over a defined period.
Resting energy expenditure (REE): The energy required to maintain vital physiological processes in a resting, awake state, typically measured by indirect calorimetry.
