Summary

Chlamydia trachomatis is the world’s most frequently reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection. In women it is often asymptomatic yet can ascend from the cervix to the upper genital tract, provoking an inflammatory response that may culminate in pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal scarring and consequent infertility, as well as heightening the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Persistent or repeated infections exacerbate tissue damage through chronic inflammation and immune-mediated pathology. Globally, the burden of chlamydial disease intersects with social determinants of health, as underserved populations experience disproportionate rates of infection and barriers to screening and treatment. Effective control hinges on early detection via sensitive molecular diagnostics, prompt antibiotic therapy, targeted screening programmes and, ultimately, a prophylactic vaccine to prevent long-term reproductive sequelae.

Seroprevalence: The proportion of individuals in a population who possess specific antibodies in their blood, indicating prior exposure to a pathogen.

Pgp3 antibody: Host immunoglobulin targeting the plasmid gene product 3 of Chlamydia trachomatis, used as a serological marker of past infection.

Nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT): A highly sensitive molecular assay that detects pathogen DNA or RNA, commonly employed for chlamydia screening.
