Christian Democracy and European Political Systems
Summary
Christian Democracy has been a defining force in the political architecture of Europe since the late nineteenth century, combining the tenets of Christian ethics with democratic governance. Rooted in Catholic social teaching, it emphasises human dignity, solidarity, subsidiarity and the common good, influencing the formation of major party families across Western and Central Europe. In the post-war era Christian Democratic parties played a central role in reconstruction, driving the creation of welfare states, consensual policymaking and European integration. They formed transnational alliances that underpinned the emergence of the European Economic Community and, later, the European Union. Over time, these parties have adapted to secularisation, pluralism and economic modernisation, recalibrating their social-market agendas in response to globalisation, demographic change and debates over identity and migration. Today Christian Democracy’s legacy can be seen in enduring institutional norms—such as coalition governance, corporatist consultation and regional subsidiarity—and in the ongoing influence of faith-inspired values on policy debates concerning social cohesion, environmental stewardship and human rights.
