Cinnamon Extracts in Metabolic Health Management

Summary

The global rise in metabolic disorders has prompted sustained interest in the potential of cinnamon extracts as adjuncts for metabolic health management. Derived from various Cinnamomum species, these extracts are rich in bioactive constituents—such as cinnamaldehyde, polyphenols and flavonoids—that modulate key pathways involved in glucose homeostasis, lipid metabolism and inflammatory signalling. In vitro and animal studies have elucidated mechanisms including enhanced insulin receptor autophosphorylation, promotion of GLUT-4 translocation, activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors and suppression of lipogenic transcription factors. Human trials employing water-soluble and polyphenol-enriched preparations report improvements in fasting glucose, haemoglobin A1c, blood pressure, lipid profile and body composition among prediabetic and metabolic syndrome cohorts. Collectively, these findings underscore the multifaceted actions of cinnamon extracts, ranging from antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects to regulation of hepatic gluconeogenesis and adipocyte differentiation. With a favourable safety profile, particularly for Cinnamomum zeylanicum which is low in coumarin, cinnamon formulations are gaining traction as functional food ingredients and nutraceuticals. Ongoing research seeks to optimise standardisation, dose regimens and formulations to translate mechanistic insights into safe, evidence-based interventions for the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors worldwide.

SREBP-1c: A transcription factor that controls expression of lipogenic enzymes involved in fatty acid and triglyceride synthesis.
