Summary

The precipitation regime of Brazil is both highly spatially and temporally heterogeneous, shaped by its continental dimensions, complex topography and interactions between tropical and extratropical circulation systems. In the Amazon and central‐west regions, the annual cycle is dominated by the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, whereas in the southeast and south, seasonal rainfall is modulated by the South Atlantic Convergence Zone, frontal systems and mesoscale convective complexes. Marks of interannual variability are often linked to El Niño–Southern Oscillation events and to sea-surface temperature anomalies in the South Atlantic and Pacific. The country encompasses multiple Köppen–Geiger climate classes, from equatorial and tropical monsoon in the north to subtropical highland and temperate oceanic regimes in the south, producing annual precipitation totals that range from under 1,000 mm in semi-arid zones to over 2,000 mm in coastal mountains. This diversity underpins the hydrological challenges of flood risk, drought management, agricultural planning and ecosystem resilience. Recent advances in remote sensing, high-resolution modelling and regional observational networks have deepened understanding of precipitation extremes, synoptic drivers and feedbacks between land-cover change and atmospheric moisture transport.
