Clinical Efficacy of Antimicrobial Dentifrices in Oral Health
Summary
Antimicrobial dentifrices combine mechanical cleansing with chemical agents to inhibit pathogenic microorganisms implicated in caries, gingivitis and periodontal disease. Evidence suggests that active ingredients such as stannous fluoride, triclosan, zinc and cetylpyridinium chloride can reduce plaque accumulation, modulate oral biofilms and enhance enamel remineralisation. Clinical trials and in situ studies have demonstrated that stabilised stannous formulations not only suppress cariogenic species but also favour commensal bacteria, contributing to a balanced oral ecosystem. Long-term use has been linked to sustained reductions in gingival bleeding and plaque indices, supporting their role in preventive dentistry and management of gingival health.
Research from Nature Portfolio
In a three-year randomised trial, participants using products with stannous ions showed a shift in salivary microbiome composition towards health-associated taxa. High-throughput sequencing revealed that genera such as Neisseria and Granulicatella were enriched, while Prevotella declined, indicating a stabilised community less prone to dysbiosis. Despite no significant changes in overall diversity, specific microbial signatures aligned with clinical measures of oral health, affirming the safety and preventive potential of continuous use of stannous-containing dentifrices in high-risk erosion patients.
Clinical Efficacy of Antimicrobial Dentifrices in Oral Health publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in clinical efficacy of antimicrobial dentifrices in oral health across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Antimicrobial dentifrice: A toothpaste formulation containing agents that inhibit or kill pathogenic oral microorganisms.
Stannous fluoride (SnF2): A tin-based fluoride compound used in dentifrices for its dual anti-caries and antimicrobial properties.
Salivary microbiome: The community of microorganisms inhabiting saliva, reflecting oral microbial ecology and health status.
Remineralisation: The process by which minerals are redeposited in demineralised enamel or dentine, reversing early carious lesions.
Dysbiosis: An imbalance in the microbial community associated with disease states, such as gingivitis or periodontitis.
