A large multicentre study conducted in tertiary hospitals in China compared outcomes among patients with methicillin-resistant S. aureus, methicillin-susceptible S. aureus and those without S. aureus infection. After propensity score matching, MRSA infection was associated with significantly increased hospital costs—ranging from USD 3,200 to USD 9,600—and extended lengths of stay by six to fourteen days. The attributable in-hospital mortality for MRSA ranged up to 3.6 per cent. Comparison with MSSA revealed higher costs and prolonged admission among survivors, but mortality rates were similar. These findings quantify the economic and clinical burden of MRSA, underscoring the need for targeted infection-control strategies and resource allocation to improve patient outcomes.
