Cognitive Assessment and Functional Performance in Schizophrenia

Summary

Schizophrenia is characterised by pervasive cognitive impairments that span attention, memory, executive function and processing speed. These deficits are among the strongest predictors of functional outcome in domains such as social participation, vocational attainment and independent living. Cognitive assessment typically employs standardised batteries—such as sustained‐attention tasks, memory recall tests and problem‐solving exercises—to quantify performance across core domains. Measures of functional capacity, including simulated activities of daily living, complement cognitive testing by estimating real‐world skills. Increasingly, research has focused on translating human paradigms into animal models to dissect underlying neural mechanisms and to accelerate the development of pro‐cognitive interventions. Cross‐species continuous performance tests and electrophysiological recordings have helped bridge preclinical and clinical findings by linking cellular and circuit‐level alterations to behavioural impairments. Together, comprehensive assessment of cognition alongside functional capacity provides both a mechanistic understanding of schizophrenia and a framework for evaluating novel therapeutic strategies aimed at improving patient autonomy and quality of life.
