Summary
As populations worldwide continue to age, preserving cognitive health has become a public‐health priority. Evidence indicates that active engagement in mentally stimulating, socially interactive and physically supportive activities can bolster resilience against age-related decline. Cognitive engagement encompasses a spectrum of pursuits, from formal learning and cultural participation to everyday social interactions and complex leisure activities. Lifestyle factors such as physical exercise, diet, sleep quality and social networks interact with cognitive challenges to influence brain structure and function. A wealth of observational and interventional studies suggests that multidomain engagement supports neural plasticity, promotes vascular health and contributes to maintenance of grey and white matter integrity. Together, these factors underpin a concept of cognitive reserve, whereby enriched experience delays onset of clinical impairment. Translating these findings into public-health strategies requires careful consideration of global cultural contexts, accessibility and sustainability of interventions.

Recent studies have examined the relationship between everyday activities and long-term cognitive trajectories. One investigation of adults aged over 52 assessed three forms of cultural engagement—visiting museums and galleries, attending theatre or concert performances, and going to the cinema—over a ten-year period. Findings indicated that those who visited museums or attended live performances experienced a slower decline in memory and semantic fluency compared with those less engaged, with even annual visits conferring benefit. In contrast, frequent cinema attendance showed minimal effect. Another study explored television viewing habits in adults aged 50 and over. It demonstrated a dose–response association between viewing more than 3.5 hours per day and subsequent decline in verbal memory over six years, independent of demographic and health-related factors. These works highlight that not all sedentary leisure has equivalent impact and that certain forms of cognitive and cultural stimulation may be more protective than others.
