Summary

The interplay between cognitive health and the characteristics of neighbourhoods has emerged as a critical field of inquiry in ageing research. As people grow older, the physical, social and environmental attributes of their local surroundings can facilitate or hinder cognitive resilience. Features of the built environment—such as street connectivity, land use mix and proximity to shops or services—may promote mental stimulation through increased mobility and social interaction. Natural elements, including parks, green corridors and waterways, offer restorative settings that reduce stress and support memory and attention. At the same time, exposures to ambient air pollutants, traffic noise and social deprivation can accelerate cognitive decline and elevate the risk of mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Socioeconomic disparities shape access to resources, influence one’s ability to engage with the local environment and contribute to inequities in cognitive ageing. Globally, research highlights the potential for urban planning, environmental regulation and community interventions to preserve cognitive function, delay the onset of impairment and enhance quality of life among older adults.

Built environment: the man-made physical features of neighbourhoods, such as street layouts, land use mix and commercial destinations, that can influence cognitive engagement.

Natural environment: green and blue spaces in neighbourhoods, including parks, waterways and tree cover, thought to support cognitive health.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI): a detectable decline in cognitive performance greater than expected for age and education without significant functional impairment.

Particulate matter (PM2.5): fine airborne particles with diameter ≤2.5 μm associated with inflammation and accelerated cognitive decline.

Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI): a composite measure assessing simultaneous deprivations across education, health and living standards within households or communities.
