Summary
Sleep deprivation disrupts a spectrum of cognitive functions, from basic attention to complex decision-making. Acute loss of sleep impairs sustained attention, leading to prolonged reaction times and lapses in vigilance. Working memory capacity is reduced, hindering the ability to hold and manipulate information and undermining problem-solving. Executive functions, such as cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control, become compromised, increasing impulsivity and reducing the capacity to adapt to changing demands. Memory consolidation processes suffer when slow-wave sleep is curtailed, with detrimental effects on both declarative and procedural memory. Brain imaging studies reveal hypoactivity in prefrontal and parietal regions, alongside alterations in hippocampal connectivity, pointing to disrupted synaptic plasticity and neurotransmitter imbalances. At a societal level, these deficits contribute to elevated accident risk, reduced productivity and impaired emotional regulation. Interventions aimed at optimising sleep duration and quality, alongside strategic napping and light exposure, emerge as critical measures to mitigate these widespread impairments.
