Summary

Frontal lobe disorders encompass a spectrum of conditions characterised by focal or diffuse damage to prefrontal regions, impairing the array of cognitive processes collectively termed executive functions. At the core of these functions lie planning, cognitive flexibility, inhibition and working memory, which enable goal‐directed behaviour. Lesions within dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, inferior frontal gyrus and anterior cingulate cortex disrupt verbal fluency, rule maintenance, set‐shifting and abstract reasoning. Neuropsychological assessments—phonemic and semantic fluency tests, proverb interpretation and design fluency tasks—reveal distinctive error patterns (perseverations, rule‐breaks and concrete responses) that map onto specific prefrontal subregions and associated white‐matter tracts.
