Domestic dogs exhibit a rich array of cognitive social skills that underpin their unique relationship with humans. These skills encompass sensitivity to human vocal cues, comprehension of gestures and intentions, adaptive problem solving and a general cognitive factor that parallels elements of human intelligence. Breed-specific traits, shaped by selective breeding, influence both neural responsiveness and social motivation. Age and health further modulate cognitive structure, revealing parallels with human cognitive ageing. Together, these findings illuminate how domestication and ongoing interaction with people have sculpted canine social cognition, with implications for training, welfare, service roles and comparative cognition research across species.

Recent studies have uncovered neural specialisation for human‐directed speech in dogs. Functional imaging in awake, unrestrained animals shows that non-primary auditory regions respond more strongly to dog-directed and infant-directed prosody than to adult-directed speech, driven by heightened sensitivity to pitch mean and variance. This neural tuning may explain dogs’ facility with human vocal communication. Complementing this, comparisons of short-snouted (brachycephalic) and intermediate-snouted (mesocephalic) breeds in a box-opening task reveal that brachycephalic breeds solve problems less successfully and orient more toward humans, suggesting that selection for infantile appearance extends to behaviour, reinforcing human-directed social engagement.
